History of Emblem
Emblem was started in 1896. A company called Solon Wiley's Big Horn Basin Development Company brought water to the area for farming. This made it possible for people to settle there.
Why the Name Changed
The area was first called "Germania Bench." This was because many German families who followed the Lutheran faith settled there to farm the land.
However, during World War I, many people in the United States felt strongly against anything that sounded German. Because of this, the communities around Germania Bench asked for the name to be changed. They wanted a new name that would represent freedom and independence. So, the name was changed to Emblem. People also often called the area "Liberty Bench" to show this new meaning.
