Emery Chance Lehman (born June 13, 1996) is an American speed skater. He has proudly represented the United States in three Winter Olympics. These include the 2014, 2018, and 2022 Games. Emery started playing ice hockey when he was six years old. He began speed skating at age nine to help improve his hockey skills.

Early Life and Hobbies

Emery Lehman was born in Chicago, Illinois. His parents are Marcia and David. He grew up in Oak Park, Illinois. Emery was an honor student at Oak Park and River Forest High School. He later studied Civil Engineering at Marquette University. He is now studying structural engineering at Johns Hopkins University.

When he's not training, Emery enjoys playing table tennis with his friends. He is a big fan of the Chicago Bears and Chicago Blackhawks. His sports hero is Bo Jackson. Emery says his mother has been the most important person in his life.

Athletic Journey

Starting with Hockey

Emery started playing ice hockey at six years old. In high school, he was a star defense player for his team. His coach said he was "always first to the puck." Emery even played for Marquette University's hockey team later on. He scored 2 goals and made 10 assists as a defense player.

Becoming a Speed Skater

Emery discovered speed skating when he was nine. He saw a poster that said speed skating could make him better at hockey. In 2010, he began training with Jeff Klaiber, a two-time Olympian.

At just 14, Emery competed in the 2010–11 World Junior Championships. He placed 11th in the 5000 meters. The next year, he was the youngest skater there. He also did well at the senior National Championships.

In 2012, Emery made a big jump in his speed. He improved his 5000-meter time by ten seconds. At 16, he became the youngest skater ever to finish the 5000 meters in under 6 minutes and 30 seconds. He said, "I know I'm doing well, but I didn't know it would be this well."

Olympic Dreams Come True

Emery continued to improve his times. In 2013, he set a new Junior National Record in the 5000 meters. This was very close to the World Junior record.

At the 2014 US Olympic Trials, Emery had an amazing race. He qualified for his first Olympic Games in the 5000 meters. Then, in the 10000-meter race, he had a thrilling finish. He was behind with three laps left but won by a tiny bit at the finish line. He said, "That was pretty insane."

At the 2014 Olympics, Emery finished 16th in the 5000 meters. He placed 10th in the 10000 meters, which was a great result for him.

Emery was also part of Team USA for the 2018 Winter Olympics. He competed in the 5000 meters and the team pursuit event.

After a break to focus on school, Emery came back strong. He changed coaches and saw great results. In 2020, he won a bronze medal in the 5000m at the Four Continents Championship. He also set a personal best in the 1500m at the World Single Distance Championships.

Since 2020, Emery has been training in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is part of the US speed skating national team program. At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Emery won a bronze medal in the team pursuit event. This was a huge achievement for him and Team USA! He has also won gold medals at the Four Continents Speed Skating Championships in team pursuit.

Other Sports

Besides hockey and speed skating, Emery also played lacrosse. He was a midfielder and played on an elite travel team. His coach described him as a "very skilled player." He even played for Marquette's Club Lacrosse team to stay in shape.
