A Life Dedicated to Plants

Emilio Guinea was a very smart student. He finished his first degree in 1929. Then, in 1932, he earned his doctorate in Natural Sciences. He studied at the Central University of Madrid, which is now called the Complutense University of Madrid.

Exploring Tropical Africa

Emilio Guinea loved to travel and discover new plants. He went on many trips to tropical Africa. He spent a lot of time exploring Equatorial Guinea, a country in Central Africa. On these trips, he collected many different plant samples. These samples helped him learn more about the plants of the world.

Working at the Royal Botanical Garden

In 1957, Emilio Guinea became the Curator of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid. A curator is like a manager who takes care of the collections. He helped look after the many plants and plant samples there.

Emilio Guinea loved the Royal Botanical Garden very much. He gave his own large collection of books about plants to the garden. He also donated his personal herbarium. A herbarium is a collection of dried plant samples. Because of his generous gifts, the Royal Botanical Garden named him an Honorary Director. This was a special title to thank him for his hard work and contributions.
