Emilio's Football Journey
Starting at Motagua
Emilio Izaguirre began his professional career with F.C. Motagua in the Honduran League. His first league game was on March 20, 2004. Motagua won that game 3–0 against Universidad.
In 2008, he had a short trial with an English club called Ipswich Town. However, he couldn't play in any matches and didn't get a contract. He also had interest from a Belgian club, RSC Anderlecht, and a Canadian club, Toronto FC, but these moves didn't happen either.
Becoming a Star at Celtic
Emilio joined Celtic in Scotland on August 18, 2010. He signed a four-year contract and was given the number 3 shirt. He made his debut in a 1–0 win against Motherwell. His performance was so good that both managers praised him.
On September 19, Emilio helped Celtic win 2–1 against Kilmarnock by setting up a goal. His first goal for Celtic came on October 30 against St Johnstone. He stole the ball, skillfully moved it past a defender, and scored. Celtic won 3–0, and Emilio was named the best player of the match.
In the 2011 League Cup Final, Emilio was sent off. However, he continued to play well. In the 2010–11 season, he won all the major player awards in Scotland. This included the SPFA Players' Player of the Year, the Scottish Premier League Player of the Year, and the Scottish Football Writers' Player of the Year. People thought he could become one of the best left-backs in the world.
Overcoming Injury and Winning Titles
In August 2011, Emilio broke his ankle. This meant he couldn't play for several months. But he worked hard to recover and returned to training in December. He made his comeback in January 2012.
Emilio played 32 league games as Celtic won their second league title in a row. He also played in the 2013 Scottish Cup final, which Celtic won 3–0. In May 2014, he signed a new contract to stay with Celtic until 2017.
In the 2015–16 season, a younger player named Kieran Tierney started playing more at left-back. Despite this, Emilio stayed with Celtic for the 2016–17 season. He played 12 games, filling in when Tierney was injured.
Time in Saudi Arabia
After leaving Celtic in 2017, Emilio joined Al-Fayha, a club in Saudi Arabia. He signed a two-year contract. However, he only stayed for 11 months. He explained that his family found the culture in Saudi Arabia very difficult. So, he decided to end his contract early.
Back to Celtic
On August 10, 2018, Emilio Izaguirre rejoined Celtic for a second time. He signed a one-year deal. He played 19 games in all competitions that season. At the end of the season, he decided not to sign another contract and left Celtic again.
Returning Home to Motagua
In August 2019, Emilio signed a one-year contract with Motagua, his first club. Later that month, he suffered an eye injury during a football match.
Playing for His Country

Emilio was part of the Honduras Under-20 team in the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship.
He made his first appearance for the senior Honduras team in January 2007. He played in 17 FIFA World Cup qualification matches. He also played in the 2007 and 2009 UNCAF Nations Cups, and the 2007, 2014, and 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cups.
Emilio was chosen to play for Honduras in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He played in two games during that tournament. He also played in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
