Emilio Nicolás Oribe (born April 13, 1893 – died May 24, 1975) was a very talented person from Uruguay. He was a poet (someone who writes poems), an essayist (someone who writes short articles), a philosopher (someone who thinks deeply about life), and even a doctor!
Oribe was a professor at the University of the Republic, Uruguay, which is a big university in Uruguay. He was also the head of the Faculty of Humanities and Sciences there. Plus, he was a member of the Uruguayan Academy of Letters, a special group for important writers.
As a poet, he liked to try new and different styles. This is called an avant-garde style. He was especially influenced by a movement called Ultraism. As a philosopher, he believed strongly in idealism, which means he thought ideas and thoughts were very important. He often shared his ideas using aphorisms, which are short, clever sayings.
