Emily Hester Brodrick (born Melvill; 15 April 1846 – 1906) was an English writer. She wrote novels using the name Mrs Alan Brodrick.

Her Early Life and Family Connections

Emily Brodrick was born in Fort William, Calcutta (which is now Kolkata, India) on 15 April 1846. Her father was Philip Melvill, and her mother was Emily Jane Hogg. Emily's family, the Melvills, were very important and powerful in the East India Company. This company was a big trading business that played a major role in India's history.

Life as a Vicar's Wife

After she got married, Emily became a vicar's wife. A vicar is a type of Christian priest. She lived in Godalming, England, from 1875. Later, from 1885 to 1901, she lived in Alverstoke. While in Alverstoke, Emily helped set up allotments for people to grow their own food. These allotments were on church land.

In 1901, Emily and her husband moved to Winchester. Her husband, Alan Brodrick, became the Master of the Hospital of St Cross. This is a very old charitable institution.

Her Books and Writing

Emily Brodrick was a writer. She wrote for a magazine called The Monthly Packet in 1888. She also wrote several novels. Her books often explored social issues from a Christian point of view.

Her Family

Emily married the Reverend Alan Brodrick on 18 June 1867. Alan was the son of William Brodrick, 7th Viscount Midleton. Emily and Alan had five children together:

  • William John Henry Brodrick (1874–1964)
  • George Trevor Brodrick (1877–1902)
  • Dorothea Mary (1889–1953)

Remembering Emily Brodrick

Emily Brodrick passed away in 1906. To remember her, her husband dedicated two special places in her honor in 1907. One was the Brodrick Memorial Hall in Gosport, which he and the local church helped build. The other was the South Chapel of the Hospital of St Cross in Winchester, which was restored in her memory.
