Amalia Emma Sophie Hartmann (born Zinn) (August 22, 1807 – March 6, 1851) was a talented Danish composer. She wrote music using the secret name Frederik H. Palmer. Emma was married to another famous composer, Johan Peter Emilius Hartmann. They lived in Copenhagen in a building called the Zinn House.

Early Life and Learning Music
Emma Zinn grew up in a rich merchant family in Copenhagen. Her father, Johann Friederich Zinn, ran the family's trading business. Emma lived in the Zinn House and learned to sing and play the piano. Her teacher was a well-known composer named Andreas Peter Berggreen.
Emma's Music and Secret Identity
Emma's first piece of music was for a student dance in 1841. Later, she published five small books of Romances and Songs. These books had 22 songs in total. Famous writers like Christian Winther and Johan Ludvig Runeberg wrote the words for her songs.
Her first book of songs came out in 1848. The last two books were published after she passed away. When all her songs were collected and published in 1892, the cover showed both her real name and her secret name, Frederik H. Palmer.
People didn't know about her secret name until 1869. That's when a book about secret names in Danish literature was published, finally revealing her identity.
Years later, in 1908, her youngest son, Frederik, privately published a collection of her piano music. A new version of these piano pieces was released in 2003.
Family Life
Emma Zinn married J.P.E. Hartmann in 1829. At that time, he was an organist at the Garrison Church. Emma and J.P.E. had ten children together.
Emma loved reading, art, and going to the theater. Famous people like Hans Christian Andersen and Clara Schumann wrote about her in their diaries, showing how much they admired her.
Emma Hartmann died at the age of 43 on March 6, 1851. She was buried in the Garrison Cemetery in Copenhagen. Her husband lived for almost fifty more years and remarried in 1855.
Many of Emma's children also became well-known. Her son Emil Hartmann became a composer, just like his parents. Her daughter Emma Sophie married another famous Danish composer, Niels W. Gade. Her daughter Clara married the pianist and composer August Winding. And her son Carl Hartmann became a sculptor.
