Serving on the Chicago City Council
Joining the City Council
In January 2000, Emma Mitts was chosen by Mayor Richard M. Daley to join the Chicago City Council. She took over the role from Percy Giles. The City Council is a group of elected officials who make laws and decisions for the city of Chicago.
Re-election and Key Decisions
Emma Mitts has been re-elected several times by the people of her ward. She won elections in 2003, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019. This shows that her community trusts her to represent them.
In 2006, the first Wal-Mart store in Chicago opened in her ward. She also had a different view on a rule about large stores, known as the 2006 Chicago Big Box Ordinance.
Later Political Roles
During the second round of the 2019 Chicago mayoral election, Emma Mitts supported Lori Lightfoot for mayor. After another leader, Karen Yarbrough, passed away, Mitts was chosen for a new role. She became a state central committeewoman for Illinois's 7th congressional district. This means she helps lead the Democratic Party in that area.
