Emmanuel Benner was a talented French painter and artist. He was born in Mulhouse, France, on March 28, 1836, and passed away in Nantes, France, on September 23, 1896. Emmanuel came from an artistic family. His father, Jean Benner-Fries, was also a painter. Emmanuel had a twin brother, Jean Benner, who was also an artist. His nephew, Emmanuel Michel Benner, also became a painter. Like his twin brother, Emmanuel was painted by another artist from his home region, Jean-Jacques Henner.
Emmanuel Benner's Artistic Journey
Emmanuel Benner learned to paint from his father. He also studied art at the School for Industrial Design in Mulhouse. Later, he moved to Paris to continue his studies with famous artists like Jean-Jacques Henner and Léon Bonnat.
Benner started showing his paintings at the important Paris Salon in 1867. This was a big art exhibition where artists could show their work to the public. He continued to exhibit his art there regularly until he passed away.
Emmanuel and his twin brother, Jean, often worked together. They even teamed up with another artist from their region, Théodore Deck, who was a ceramist and potter. Their painting styles were very similar. Sometimes, they would even paint parts of the same artwork. An example of their teamwork is the painting Allégorie de l’Exposition Universelle de Paris en 1878. This painting, like many of their works, featured beautiful women, which was one of their favorite subjects.
Emmanuel Benner is buried with his brother and nephew in the family tomb. This tomb is located in the famous Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
