Jean had a twin brother named Emmanuel Benner, who was also an artist. Jean's son, Emmanuel M. Benner, continued the family's artistic tradition.

Jean Benner and his twin brother, Emmanuel, were born in March 1836. Their hometown was Mulhouse, in the Alsace region of France. Their father was named Jean Benner-Fries.

Becoming an Artist

The Benner brothers first worked as designers. They created patterns for mills and factories in Mulhouse.

By the time he was 30 years old, Jean Benner began studying art. He learned from famous artists like Léon Bonnat and Jean-Jacques Henner.

In 1868, Jean showed his paintings at the Paris Salon. This was a very important art exhibition in Paris. In 1881, he won his first medal there. He earned it for his painting called Le Repos (which means Rest).

What Jean Painted

Jean Benner painted many different kinds of art. He created still-life paintings, which show objects like flowers or fruit. He also painted portraits of people.

He was known for his genre paintings. These show scenes from everyday life. Some of his famous works include After a Storm at Capri (1872) and Trappist in Prayer (1875). He also painted Petite Falle de Capri, Flowers and Fruits (1868) and Reverie.
