Emmanuel Marie Pierre Martin Jacquin de Margerie (born November 11, 1862 – died December 20, 1953) was a famous French geographer. A geographer studies the Earth's surface, including its landforms, climates, and people. A huge glacier in Alaska, the Margerie Glacier, is named after him. He even visited this glacier in 1913!
Early Life
Emmanuel de Margerie was born into an old French family. His father, Eugène de Margerie, was a writer. Their family, the Jacquin de Margerie Family, had been important in France for a long time. They were even involved with royal administrators in Picardy back in the 1600s, during the time of King Louis XIV.
Awards and Honors
Emmanuel de Margerie received many important awards for his work in geography. These awards show how much his studies and discoveries were valued.
- In 1919, he was given the Cullum Geographical Medal by the American Geographical Society. This medal is a big honor for geographers.
- He became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1922.
- In 1923, he received the Mary Clark Thompson Medal from the National Academy of Sciences.
- He was also chosen to be a member of the American Philosophical Society in 1932.
The famous Margerie Glacier in Alaska was named in his honor. This shows his lasting impact on the field of geography.
