Emmetten was first mentioned in old writings around the year 1160. Back then, it was known by the name Empnoten. This shows that people have lived in this area for a very long time.

Emmetten covers an area of about 25 square kilometers (around 9.6 square miles). A big part of this land, almost 38%, is used for farming. Even more, about 46%, is covered by forests. A small portion, about 2.6%, has buildings and roads. The rest, about 13.7%, is made up of mountains, rivers, or other natural areas that aren't used for farming or building.

This village is found along a main road that connects Beckenried and Seelisberg. It sits on both sides of a pass called the Egg, which is right by Lake Lucerne.
