Emo (which means "bed" or "resting-place" in Irish) is a small village in County Laois, Ireland. It is located close to the town of Portlaoise. You can find it just off the M7 which connects Dublin and Limerick.

History of Emo Village

The village of Emo began to grow in the late 1700s. It developed around the main gates of a famous place called Emo Court. The village's first pub, originally named "New Inn" and now known as "Gate House", opened around the same time the village was founded.

The beautiful Gothic Catholic Church in Emo also dates back to this period. Inside the church, you can find the tomb of Aline, Lady Portarlington. The land for the church was a gift from Lord Portarlington. He also provided the house and land next to the church for the local priest at a very low rent.

About Emo Court

Emo Court is a grand house designed in 1790 by a famous architect named James Gandon. He created it for the first Earl of Portarlington. Emo Court is a great example of the neoclassical style, which means it uses ideas from ancient Greek and Roman buildings.
