Emory Andrew Tate Jr. (born December 27, 1958 – died October 17, 2015) was a talented American International Master of chess. He was born in Chicago, Illinois. Emory Tate was known for his exciting and aggressive style of play on the chessboard.
Playing Chess
Emory Tate was a very unique chess player. His older son, Andrew, once said that his father never seemed to study chess books. He also didn't like using chess computers to practice. Instead, he just sat down and played the game!
Tate was a highly-rated player. His highest FIDE rating was 2413 in October 2006. This made him one of the top players in the United States. He was known on the U.S. chess scene as a very creative and dangerous player. He won about 80 tournament games against Grandmasters, who are the highest-ranked chess players.
Emory Tate was also a five-time champion of the United States Armed Forces Chess championship. He was one of the highest-rated Black chess players in the world. Another chess player and Air Force veteran, Leroy Hill, shared a fun fact about Tate. He said that Emory's friends called him "Extraterrestrial." This was because they thought his chess moves were "out of this world"!
About Emory Tate
Emory Tate was born in Chicago. His father, Emory Andrew Tate Sr., was a well-known lawyer. Emory learned to play chess when he was a child. He also had a special talent for learning languages. He could speak both Russian and Spanish very well.
He served in the United States Air Force as a staff sergeant. His language skills were very helpful during his time in the military. His son mentioned that the military taught him Russian. He also learned Spanish and German just by being around people who spoke those languages.
Emory Tate had three children with his British wife. His older son, Emory Andrew Tate III, is known as Andrew. He is a notable kickboxer. His daughter, Janine Tate Webb, works as a lawyer in the United States.
Sadly, Emory Tate passed away on October 17, 2015. He collapsed suddenly during a chess tournament near San Jose, California.
