What Was Emu Downs Like in the Past?

In 1880, people described Emu Downs as a valley. It stretched between the Robertstown hills on the west. There were also smaller hills on the east. The western side was perfect for raising sheep. Big sheep farms like Anlaby and Koonoona were close by. Even with less rain, crops usually grew well here.

Emu Downs Post Office History

The Emu Downs Post Office opened on May 1, 1881. It helped people send and receive mail. In 1921, it became a smaller "receiving office." It was upgraded again in 1927. The post office finally closed for good on December 31, 1973.

Churches and Community Life

Emu Downs Lutheran Church

The Emu Downs Lutheran Church was officially opened in 1876. This first church building closed in 1908. A brand new church was built in the same year. The second church closed its doors in 1989. It was then sold to private owners. Sadly, it was badly damaged in a fire. But it has since been fixed up and looks good again.

Emu Downs School's Journey

The Emu Downs School started as a Lutheran school around 1876. In June 1917, during World War I, the government took over many "German" schools. Emu Downs School was one of them. It reopened in July as a state school. Over the years, it changed between a provisional and a primary school. This depended on how many students were there. The school closed in 1949 because not enough students attended. In its last year, the teacher lived in a caravan. This was because the closest housing was four miles away.

Emu Downs Cemetery

The Emu Downs Cemetery is on Kotz Road. A group called the Russian Molokan Spiritual Christian Leapers & Jumpers Cemetery Inc. takes care of it.

Official Recognition of Emu Downs
