Worlds End is a small place located about 18 kilometers (11 miles) southeast of Burra in South Australia. This area also includes a place that used to be called Lapford.
History of Worlds End
The land where Worlds End is located was originally the home of the Ngadjuri people. They lived here for many years before European settlement.
The Story of Lapford
In June 1877, a government town called Lapford was planned near the Burra Creek. However, this town never really grew or developed. Some land blocks in Lapford were finally sold in 1941. But by December 13, 1962, the town was officially declared to no longer exist.
Early Community Life
Worlds End once had its own important services and community activities. A post office, called Worlds End Creek Post Office, opened on November 1, 1876. It helped people send and receive mail until it closed on May 31, 1971.
The Worlds End Creek School opened its doors in 1888. It provided education for local children until September 2, 1944. The school closed because there were not enough teachers available to run it.
A church building for the Wesleyan Methodist community was built in 1889. This church was an important part of the community until it closed in 1975. For some time, this church building was also used as a school. Worlds End even had its own sports teams, including cricket and tennis teams.
Nature and Parks
Worlds End is also home to a special natural area. The Mimbara Conservation Park is located within the Worlds End area. Conservation parks are places set aside to protect nature, including plants and animals.
