Enda Stevens' Club Career
Starting in Ireland
Stevens started his professional football journey with UCD. After a short time there, he joined St Patrick's Athletic in 2009. He quickly became the main left-back for the team. He even played in six matches in the 2009–10 UEFA Europa League, helping St Patrick's Athletic get past two teams before being knocked out.
In December 2009, Stevens moved to Shamrock Rovers. In his first season, he played 27 games and helped the team win the League of Ireland Premier Division title. He also played against famous Italian club Juventus in the Europa League qualifiers.
The 2011 season was very successful for Stevens and Shamrock Rovers. They won the Setanta Cup and the League of Ireland title again. Stevens played in all 12 of Rovers' European matches that year. They made history by becoming the first Irish club to reach the group stages of a European competition, the UEFA Europa League. For his great performances, Stevens won the PFAI Young Player of the Year award.
Time at Aston Villa
In August 2011, Aston Villa, a club in the top English league (Premier League), announced that Stevens would join them in January 2012. This allowed him to finish the European season with Shamrock Rovers.
After joining Aston Villa, Stevens first played for their reserve team. He made his full debut for the main team in a League Cup match in August 2012. His first league game for Villa was in November 2012, coming on as a substitute against Sunderland. He then started his first league match against Manchester United.
Stevens played nine games for Aston Villa in the 2012–13 season. However, he found it hard to break into the first team regularly. He later admitted that he wasn't fully ready for the big step up to the Premier League. He said the level of professionalism and fitness was much higher than he expected.
Loan Spells from Aston Villa
To gain more experience, Stevens went on several loan spells to other clubs.
- In August 2013, he joined League One team Notts County for a month, playing four games.
- He then moved to Championship side Doncaster Rovers in November 2013. He stayed there until the end of the 2013–14 season, playing 14 matches.
- In October 2014, he had a short loan at Northampton Town, where he scored his first professional goal.
- He returned to Doncaster Rovers for another loan spell from November 2014 until the end of the 2014–15 season, playing 32 more games.
Stevens left Aston Villa in the summer of 2015 when his contract ended.
Playing for Portsmouth
In June 2015, Stevens signed a two-year contract with Portsmouth, a team in EFL League Two. He quickly became a key player in their defense. In his first season, he played 53 games as Portsmouth finished sixth. They reached the play-offs but lost to Plymouth Argyle.
Stevens scored his only goal for Portsmouth in December 2016. In the 2016–17 season, he continued to be the main left-back. Portsmouth won the League Two title that season. Stevens also received many individual awards, including being named in the EFL Team of the Season and the PFA Team of the Year. He was also voted Portsmouth's Player of the Season.
Success with Sheffield United
Stevens' excellent form at Portsmouth caught the attention of Championship clubs. In May 2017, he joined Sheffield United on a three-year contract. He quickly became the first-choice left-back under manager Chris Wilder. In the 2017–18 season, he played 47 games.
The 2018–19 season was fantastic for Stevens and Sheffield United. He played 46 games and scored a career-high four goals. The team finished second in the Championship, earning promotion to the Premier League.
In March 2020, Stevens signed a new contract to stay with Sheffield United until 2023. He was one of their best players in the 2019–20 Premier League season. The team surprised many by finishing in ninth place, even though they were expected to be relegated.
The 2020–21 season was tough for the Blades, and they were relegated back to the Championship. Stevens played 24 games in the 2021–22 season, but he missed three months due to a calf injury. Sheffield United finished fifth and lost in the play-offs. In the 2022–23 season, Stevens played 13 games as the team finished second again, getting promoted back to the Premier League. He left Sheffield United when his contract ended.
Move to Stoke City
After leaving Sheffield United, Stevens joined Stoke City, another Championship club, on July 5, 2023. He signed a one-year contract. He faced some injuries during the 2023–24 season but played in the final eight matches, helping Stoke avoid relegation. His good performances earned him a one-year contract extension. In the 2024–25 season, Stevens played 21 games as Stoke again avoided relegation on the final day. He left the club when his contract ended at the close of the season.
