Enfield West was a special area in the United Kingdom that used to elect one person to speak for its people in the House of Commons. This person is called a Member of Parliament, or MP for short. The Enfield West area was created for the election in 1950. It stopped being a separate area for elections in February 1974.

What Was Enfield West?

Enfield West was a specific area in England that elected its own MP. It was like a team that sent one player to represent them in a big game. This "team" was made up of the Urban District of Potters Bar. It also included the South West and West parts of the Urban District of Enfield.

Changing Borders

Over time, the borders of areas in the UK can change. In 1965, Potters Bar became part of Hertfordshire. Before that, it was part of Middlesex. Even though the local government areas changed, the election area for Enfield West stayed the same for a while. The other parts of Enfield West also moved from Middlesex to Greater London. These changes happened because of a special law passed in 1963.

Who Represented Enfield West?

The people of Enfield West elected two different Members of Parliament during its time. Both MPs were from the Conservative Party.

Elections in Enfield West

People in Enfield West voted in several general elections to choose their MP. A general election is when everyone in the country votes for who they want to represent them in Parliament.

Voting in the 1950s

In the 1950 general election, Iain Macleod won for the Conservative Party. He received more than half of all the votes. He continued to win in the elections of 1951, 1955, and 1959. Each time, he won by a large number of votes. This showed that many people in Enfield West supported him and the Conservative Party.

Voting in the 1960s

Iain Macleod also won the general elections in 1964 and 1966. In 1964, other parties like the Liberal Party and Labour Party also had candidates. An Independent Conservative candidate also ran. But Iain Macleod still won, though with a smaller percentage of votes than before.

Voting in the 1970s

Iain Macleod won again in the 1970 general election. However, he sadly passed away shortly after this election. Because of this, a special election called a "by-election" was held in 1970. In this by-election, Cecil Parkinson was elected as the new MP for Enfield West. He was also from the Conservative Party.

Enfield West stopped being an election area in February 1974. Its parts were then included in new election areas.
