The Engineer Carlos Fernández Casado Bridge is a special kind of bridge called a cable-stayed bridge. It crosses the Barrios de Luna Reservoir in León, Spain. This bridge is part of a big highway, the Autovia A-66. When it opened in 1983, it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world for a few years!

A famous engineer named Javier Manterola designed this bridge. He named it to honor another important Spanish bridge architect, Carlos Fernández Casado (who lived from 1905 to 1988).

Bridge Design and Features

This bridge has two tall towers, also called piers. One tower is 102 meters (about 335 feet) high, and the other is 117 meters (about 384 feet) high. These towers help hold up the bridge deck with strong cables.

The main part of the bridge, called the main span, stretches 440 meters (about 1,444 feet) across the water. The parts of the bridge on either side of the main span are each 101.7 meters (about 334 feet) long. The bridge deck, where cars drive, is 22.5 meters (about 74 feet) wide and 2.3 meters (about 7.5 feet) deep.

Building the Bridge

Work on the Engineer Carlos Fernández Casado Bridge started in 1981. It took two years to build, and the bridge was finished and opened in 1983.
