English is a small, unincorporated community in northern Brazoria County, Texas, United States. Being "unincorporated" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's located near Oyster Creek and is part of the larger Greater Houston metropolitan area.
History of English
The community of English might have been named after a local family, perhaps someone called "Buck" English.
English started as a stop along the Sugar Land Railway. This railway station was about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north of what is now Farm to Market Road 1462, right on Oyster Creek.
- In 1917, English had a general store where people could buy everyday items.
- It also had a cotton gin, which was a machine used to separate cotton fibers from their seeds.
- In 1921, English even had its own post office.
- However, the post office closed just three years later in 1924. Its mail services then moved to the post office in Sandy Point.
- Maps from the 1980s showed that English had only a few scattered homes and some old, empty buildings.
Where is English Located?
English is situated north of the Ramsey Unit, which is a state prison. It is also about 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Angleton, a larger city nearby.
