The English Institute of Sport (EIS) is a huge sports center in Sheffield, England. It's a place where many different sports can be played and practiced. The building opened in December 2003. It cost about £24 million to build.

The EIS has a special 200-meter indoor running track. It also has many other sports areas. There's a big gym and places for sports medicine. This helps athletes stay healthy and recover from injuries. The center is located in the Lower Don Valley. It is near the Sheffield Arena and Don Valley Bowl. SIV (Sheffield International Venues) manages this amazing facility.

Major Events and Championships

In February 2009, the EIS hosted the European Indoor Trials & UK Championships for athletics. It was a big event for runners and jumpers. In July 2011, the European Fencing championships were held here.

Since 2008, the EIS has hosted qualifying matches for the World Snooker Championship. These matches help decide which players get to compete in the main tournament. The main stages of the championship happen at the nearby Crucible Theatre. The qualifying matches usually take place in April. The EIS also hosted qualifying matches for other snooker tournaments.

Training for the Olympics

British athletes used the EIS-Sheffield to train for the 2012 Summer Olympics. It was a vital place for them to prepare for the world's biggest sports event. In February 2015, it was announced that the EIS-Sheffield would become part of the Olympic Legacy Park. This park was built on the site of the old Don Valley Stadium.

The EIS was also chosen as one of three places to host matches for the 2021 Wheelchair Rugby League World Cup. This shows its importance for different kinds of sports.
