Ennis is a small, unincorporated community located in McDowell County, West Virginia, in the United States. It's found along U.S. Route 52, just west of another community called Switchback.
An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually managed by the county it's located in.
How Ennis Got Its Name
The community of Ennis was most likely named after a local family. Specifically, it was named after Joanna Ennis McQuail. She was the wife of a man named William McQuail, who was a coal operator.
The McQuail family owned two important companies in the area: the Ennis Coal Company and the Turkey Gap Coal Company. This shows how important coal mining was to the region's history.
