Enric Mas Nicolau (born January 7, 1995) is a Spanish professional racing cyclist. He rides for the Movistar Team, which is a top-level cycling team. Enric is known as a strong climber, meaning he's great at riding up hills and mountains. He is also a "general classification contender," which means he aims to win the entire race, not just individual stages.
Enric has had great success in the Vuelta a España, one of cycling's biggest races. He won a stage in 2018 and has finished second overall three times. He also won the "young rider classification" twice, which is a special award for the best young cyclist in the race. His other big wins include the 2019 Tour of Guangxi, a stage at the 2018 Tour of the Basque Country, and the 2022 Giro dell'Emilia, a famous one-day race.
Enric Mas's Cycling Journey
Enric Mas was born in Artà, a small town on the island of Majorca in Spain. He started his professional cycling career in 2016.
Joining Quick-Step Floors (2017–2019)
In 2017, Enric joined Quick-Step Floors, a major team in the cycling world. This was his first year competing in the top-tier World Tour races.
2017: First World Tour Season
In 2017, Enric showed his talent at the Vuelta a Burgos race. He finished second in the final stage and also second overall. He also took part in the 2017 Vuelta a España, where he won the "Combativity Award" on two stages. This award goes to the rider who shows the most fighting spirit.
2018: Big Wins and Podiums
The 2018 season was a breakthrough year for Enric. He got his first professional win at the 2018 Tour of the Basque Country, winning the final stage. He finished sixth overall in that race and won the young rider classification.
He continued his strong performance at the 2018 Tour de Suisse, where he finished fourth overall and again won the young rider classification.
At the 2018 Vuelta a España, Enric showed amazing strength. He climbed his way up the overall standings. On Stage 20, he attacked on the final climb and won the stage, his first victory in a Grand Tour. This incredible performance moved him from fourth to second place overall, earning him a spot on the podium in only his second Grand Tour.
2019-2020: Consistent Top Finishes
In 2019, Enric continued to perform well, earning top 10 finishes in the 2019 Volta a Catalunya and the 2019 Tour de Suisse. He also competed in his first 2019 Tour de France, finishing 22nd.
The 2020 season saw him achieve top 5 finishes in both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. He won his second young rider competition at the Vuelta. He also helped another rider, Primož Roglič, secure his win in that Vuelta by working together on a tough climb.
2021: Battling for the Vuelta Title
Enric rode in the 2021 Tour de France, finishing in sixth place overall. He was the highest-placed rider from his team.
During the 2021 Vuelta a España, Enric was in excellent form. The race became a close battle between him and Primož Roglič. Enric consistently stayed close to Roglič on most climbs. He finished the race in second place overall, showing his strength and consistency.
2022: More Vuelta Success and a Big Win
Enric started the 2022 Tour de France as his team's leader but had to leave the race early due to illness.
Later that year, he raced in the 2022 Vuelta a España again. He finished second overall for the third time in his career, behind Remco Evenepoel. Enric ended the season strongly by winning the 2022 Giro dell'Emilia, a classic Italian race, beating another famous cyclist, Tadej Pogacar. He also placed second in 2022 Il Lombardia, another important classic race.
2023: Unlucky Start
Enric started the 2023 Tour de France but unfortunately crashed on the very first stage and had to withdraw from the race.
