Cycle sport facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cycle sport is all about competing and being active using bicycles. It's a fun way to test your skills and speed! There are many types of cycle sport. Some are races, like road bicycle racing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX, and cycle speedway. Other types are not races. These include artistic cycling, cycle polo, freestyle BMX, mountain bike trials, and cycleball.

The main group that organizes cycling events around the world is called the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). They set the rules for most international cycling competitions.

Bicycle racing is even an Olympic sport! It's very popular in many countries, especially in Europe. Countries like Belgium, France, Italy, and the Netherlands love bicycle racing. Other countries, including Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, also have strong cycling communities.

History of Cycle Sport

The first bicycle race ever recorded happened on May 31, 1868. It was a 1,200-meter (about 3,900 feet) race in Paris, France. An Englishman named James Moore won it on a wooden bicycle. This bike had solid rubber tires. You can see it today in a museum in Ely, England.

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) was started on April 14, 1900. It was created by Belgium, the United States, France, Italy, and Switzerland. This group took over from an older cycling association.

Cycling has been a part of the Summer Olympic Games since they started again in 1896. It has been in every Summer Olympics since then!

Types of Bicycle Racing

Road Bicycle Racing

Road bicycle racing can be for teams or individual riders. Races happen in different ways. Some are one-day races, while others are multi-stage events. Famous multi-stage races include the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia, and Vuelta a España. These are known as cycling's "Grand Tours."

Road races usually take place from spring to autumn. Many professional riders train in warmer countries during the winter. Races can be very long, like the Tour de France, which lasts three weeks. There are also shorter one-day races called "Classics."

A "criterium" is a type of road race on a short circuit, usually less than a mile long. These races often run for a set time, like 60 or 90 minutes. Criteriums are very popular in North America. Besides races where everyone starts at once, there are also individual time trials and team time trials. In these, riders race against the clock.

Track Cycling

Track cycling has been around since the 1870s. Riders compete on special indoor tracks called velodromes. Because they are indoors, track races can happen all year round, no matter the weather.

Track events are very varied. They include individual and team pursuits, sprints, and group races. Riders use special track bicycles that do not have brakes or a freewheel (meaning you can't stop pedaling).

Cyclo-cross

Cyclo-cross started as a way for road racers to train in the off-season. Races usually happen in autumn and winter. The courses are about 2 to 3 kilometers (1.2 to 1.9 miles) long. They include pavement, wooded trails, grass, and steep hills.

Riders often have to get off their bikes and carry them over obstacles. Races for older riders usually last between 30 minutes and an hour. This sport is very popular in countries like Belgium and France.

Mountain Bike Racing

Mountain bike races are held off-road. They involve riding on challenging terrain. There are different types of mountain bike racing. The main ones are cross-country, enduro, and downhill. There is also 4X racing.

BMX Racing

BMX racing also takes place off-road. These races are short sprints on special dirt tracks. The tracks have jumps, banked corners, and flat corners. Riders use single-gear bicycles made for this sport.

Cycle Speedway

Cycle speedway is a type of bicycle racing on short outdoor dirt tracks. These tracks are usually about 70 to 90 meters (230 to 295 feet) long.

Gravel Racing

Gravel racing is one of the newest types of bicycle racing. It became popular in the 21st century. These races are often very long, from 100 to 200 miles (160 to 320 kilometers). Everyone starts at the same time, like in some other big cycling events.

Gravel races use different types of bikes and courses. Some courses are smooth gravel roads, good for road bikes with wider tires. Others are more like mountain bike trails.

Non-Racing Cycle Sports

Freestyle BMX

Freestyle BMX is an extreme sport. It involves doing amazing stunts and tricks on BMX bikes.

Artistic Cycling

Artistic cycling is a unique sport. Athletes perform tricks and routines on their bikes. It's a bit like ballet or gymnastics, but on a bicycle!

Cycle Ball

Cycle ball, also known as "radball," is like playing soccer on bicycles. Two players are on each team. They ride special fixed-gear bicycles that have no brakes. Players control the ball with their bike or head, except when defending the goal.

Cycle Polo

Cycle Polo is a team sport that mixes traditional horse polo with bicycling. It is played on grass. Cycle Polo was even shown as a demonstration sport at the 1908 London Olympics. It is very popular in India.
