Enrique Pérez de Guzmán y de Castilla (born February 20, 1391 – died October 31, 1436) was an important Spanish nobleman. He was also known as the 2nd Count of Niebla. Enrique was a military leader during the Reconquista, a long period when Christian kingdoms took back land from Muslim rule in Spain. He sadly drowned while trying to capture Gibraltar.

Who Was Enrique Pérez de Guzmán?
Enrique Pérez de Guzmán was the son of Juan Alonso de Guzmán, who was the first Count of Niebla. His mother was Beatriz de Castilla y Ponce de León. She was the Lady of Niebla. Beatriz was also the daughter of Henry II of Castile, a king of Castile.
His Marriage and Family
On March 4, 1405, Enrique married Teresa Suárez de Figueroa y Orozco. She was a noblewoman who owned lands like Escamilla and Santa Olalla. Teresa's father was Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa. He was a very important leader of the Military Order of Santiago, a famous group of knights.
His Role in the Canary Islands
In 1430, Enrique Pérez de Guzmán made an important decision. He gave ownership of two Canary Islands – El Hierro and Lanzarote – to Hernan Peraza the Elder. This move was very helpful for the Peraza family. It allowed them to gain more control over the islands. This was during the time when Spain was trying to take over the Canary Islands, known as the Conquest of the Canary Islands.
The Siege of Gibraltar
Enrique Pérez de Guzmán was a brave military leader. In October 1436, he led an attack on Gibraltar. At that time, Gibraltar was controlled by the Spanish Moors. This attack was known as the Seventh Siege of Gibraltar. During this battle, Enrique tragically drowned.
