A Look Back: The History of the Enrollment Services Center
Building a Dream: Early Years
Work on the building began in 1904. People had planned and raised money for years. But in 1905, they ran out of money. The building sat unfinished for two years. Then, a person named Laverne Noyes offered to pay to finish it. He had a few rules:
- The building had to be called "Alumni Hall."
- The Alumni Association (a group for former students) would get office space. They could also use the building once a year.
- The building had to be open for all students to use.
Fun and Help: What Was Inside?
Until 1914, this building had the only swimming pool on campus! In 1917, it became a hospital during a big flu outbreak. It also had a cafe called "College Inn." Students could even go bowling there!
Between 1927 and 1937, the building was changed. More student rooms, game rooms, and study rooms were added. Offices were also added when the College Inn cafe closed. This happened because the Memorial Union was being built. The Alumni Association also moved to the Memorial Union.
World War II and Beyond
During World War II, Alumni Hall was used as an administration building. It housed the Naval Training School. After the Navy moved out in 1944, the building continued to be used. It housed the YMCA, YWCA, and even served as dormitories for students.
In 1966, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This recognizes its historical importance. In 1986, the Iowa Board of Regents allowed Iowa State University to buy the building. The last students living there moved out in 1987. After that, a big renovation costing $2.1 million was done. This made sure the historic building was updated.
A New Name for a New Purpose
In 2008, the building's name changed. It went from Alumni Hall to the Enrollment Services Center. This was done to avoid confusion. A new building called the Alumni Center was built. Today, the Enrollment Services Center houses the Office of Admissions and the Office of the Registrar. These offices help new and current students every day.
