Enterprise was a small settlement, or town, in Butte County, California. It used to be called Mountain Spring. This former town was located about 5 miles (8.0 km) west-northwest of Forbestown. It sat on the South Fork of the Feather River, at an elevation of 902 feet (275 m). Sadly, in 1968, Enterprise was covered by the waters of Lake Oroville.

What Was Enterprise?

Enterprise was a busy place during California's early days. It played an important role for miners in the area. The town helped supply them with what they needed.

Early Days: Mountain Spring

The town of Enterprise was first started in 1852. Back then, it was known as Mountain Spring. It began as a camp for construction workers. These workers were likely building things in the growing region.

A Mining Supply Town

Later, Enterprise became a key supply center. It supported the many mining operations nearby. Miners working near Bidwell's Bar relied on Enterprise. A post office even opened in Enterprise in 1878. It served the community until 1926, with a short break in 1903. Another mining town, Yankee Flat, was located about 5 miles (8.0 km) southeast of Enterprise.

Vanished Under Water

The story of Enterprise ended in 1968. The area where the town stood was flooded. This happened when Lake Oroville was created. Now, Enterprise rests beneath the lake's waters.
