Epididymitis facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Epididymitis is when a small tube behind the testicle gets swollen and sore. This tube is called the epididymis. It usually happens because of a bacterial infection. Sometimes, it can also be caused by an injury or a viral infection.

What is Epididymitis?

Epididymitis is a condition where the epididymis becomes inflamed. The epididymis is a coiled tube located at the back of each testicle. Its main job is to store and carry sperm from the testicles.

Causes of Epididymitis

Most of the time, epididymitis is caused by a bacterial infection. These bacteria can travel from other parts of the body to the epididymis. Less often, it can be caused by a virus or even an injury to the area.

Symptoms of Epididymitis

When someone has epididymitis, they might feel pain in the scrotum, which is the sac holding the testicles. The scrotum might also look red or swollen. Other symptoms can include fever, chills, or pain when peeing.

How Doctors Diagnose It

To find out if someone has epididymitis, a doctor will usually do a physical exam. They might also ask for a urine test to check for bacteria. Sometimes, an ultrasound scan is used to get a clearer picture of the epididymis.

Treatment for Epididymitis

If bacteria are causing the problem, doctors will prescribe antibiotics. It's important to take all the medicine as directed. Resting, using cold packs, and wearing supportive underwear can also help reduce pain and swelling.
