Epworth Freemasons is a hospital located in East Melbourne, Australia. It first opened its doors in 1937. This hospital was started by a group called Freemasonry to help people in the Victorian community. Today, it is managed by Epworth Healthcare.
This hospital is a private, not-for-profit organization. It offers many different health services. These include care for women, various types of surgery, and full cancer treatment.
In October 2006, a company called ING Real Estate bought the hospital. They then leased it to Epworth Healthcare. This change meant that the old emergency room at Freemasons Hospital closed. Patients needing emergency care now go to Epworth Richmond's emergency department.
Epworth Freemasons Hospital continues to serve the community. The building itself is very important. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register because of its history and design.

History of the Hospital
The Freemasons Hospital began in 1937. It was an idea from the Freemasons group in the 1930s. They wanted a hospital for middle-class patients who could pay for their care.
Original Building Design
The first building had five levels. It was made of reinforced concrete. Architects Stephenson and Meldrum designed it. They used a style called Functionalist Modern. This style featured strong horizontal balconies. It also had a tall, contrasting service tower. The building had very little decoration. Its outside was white with blue tiles. It also had horizontal steel railings.
Hospital Expansions
Between 1956 and 1958, the hospital grew bigger. Architects Meldrum and Noad added new parts. They made sure the new sections matched the original design. They continued the long, sweeping balconies. More wings were added to the east in 1968 and again in 1977. The main entrance was also changed during this time.
The hospital is important to Victoria's history. Its architecture is also very significant.
