Eremophila sp. 'Yinnetharra'

Eremophila yinnetharrensis is a special type of flowering plant. It is part of the Scrophulariaceae family. This plant grows only in a small area of Western Australia. It is a tall, thin shrub with unique leaves and beautiful purple flowers. You can find it only near Yinnetharra Station in the Gascoyne region.

About the Yinnetharra Eremophila

The Eremophila yinnetharrensis is a tall, thin shrub. It usually grows to be about 1.5 to 3 meters (5 to 10 feet) tall. It can also spread out 1.5 to 4 meters (5 to 13 feet) wide. Its branches are grey and covered with many tiny, branched hairs.

Leaves and Flowers

The leaves of this plant grow one after another along the stem. They do not have a stalk, meaning they are directly attached to the stem. These leaves are shaped like a spearhead, wider at the top and narrower at the bottom. They are small, usually 4 to 13 millimeters (about 0.16 to 0.5 inches) long. They are also thin, about 1 to 4 millimeters (0.04 to 0.16 inches) wide.

Each flower grows by itself where a leaf meets the stem. It sits on a small stalk called a pedicel, which is about 8 to 11 millimeters long. The flower has five purple parts called sepals. These sepals are shaped like an oval and are 9 to 14 millimeters long. They are also covered in many branched hairs. The main part of the flower is a purple tube, 18 to 25 millimeters long. This tube does not have any spots. Inside the flower tube, there are four stamens, which are the parts that produce pollen.

When it Flowers

This plant mostly flowers from June to September. However, it can also bloom at other times if there has been rain.

How it Got its Name

This plant was first officially described in 2016. Two scientists, Bevan Buirchell and Andrew Phillip Brown, wrote about it. They published their findings in a science journal called Nuytsia. The first plants studied were collected by Joff Start in 2005 from Yinnetharra Station. The plant's name, yinnetharrensis, comes from Yinnetharra Station. This is the place where the plant was first found.

Where it Lives

The Eremophila yinnetharrensis is only found in one main area. This area is its type location, which is near Yinnetharra Station. It grows on rocky hills in the Gascoyne biogeographic region.

Protecting the Plant

The Government of Western Australia's Department of Parks and Wildlife has listed Eremophila yinnetharrensis as "Priority One". This means it is known from only one or a few places. These places could be at risk, so the plant needs special protection to survive.
