Halil Ergin Ataman (born January 7, 1966) is a famous Turkish professional basketball coach. He is currently the head coach for Panathinaikos in Greece and also leads the Turkish national team.
Ataman is known for winning three EuroLeague titles, which is a huge achievement in European basketball. He won two titles in a row with Anadolu Efes in 2021 and 2022. Then, in 2024, he won his third EuroLeague title with Panathinaikos BC in his very first year with the team.

Playing Career
Ergin Ataman started his basketball journey as a player in 1982. He played for amateur basketball clubs like Eczacıbaşı and Yeşilyurt.
Coaching Career
Starting Out as a Coach
Ataman began his coaching career with youth teams at Eczacıbaşı and Efes Pilsen. He then coached several top teams in the Turkish Super League, including Türk Telekom, Pınar Karşıyaka, and Efes Pilsen. He also worked as an assistant coach for the Turkish national team in 1997. To learn more, he even spent time observing at Stanford University in the United States.
After returning to Europe, he coached the Italian team Montepaschi Siena. With them, he won the Saporta Cup in 2002. He later coached Ülkerspor in Turkey and Climamio Bologna in Italy before coming back to Turkey to coach Beşiktaş in 2007.
Success with Beşiktaş and Efes Pilsen
Ataman had a great season with Beşiktaş in 2007–08. They reached the Quarter Finals of the EuroCup. After leaving Beşiktaş, he signed with Efes Pilsen. There, he achieved major success in the 2008–09 season, winning the Turkish League, Turkish Cup, and Turkish President's Cup.
He returned to Beşiktaş in 2011 and continued his winning streak. In 2012, he led Beşiktaş to win the Turkish Cup, the EuroChallenge title, and the Turkish League championship.
Leading Galatasaray Odeabank
In 2012, Ataman joined Galatasaray Odeabank. He quickly led them to win the Turkish League championship in 2013.
During the 2014–15 season, Galatasaray faced some challenges. Ataman was involved in a situation where his comments about some opposing fans caused a lot of discussion, especially after a sad event occurred before a game. He later apologized for his remarks, explaining that he made them before knowing about the tragedy.
In 2016, Ataman's Galatasaray team won the EuroCup title. This was his third European championship as a head coach.
Triumphs with Anadolu Efes
In December 2017, Ataman became the coach for Anadolu Efes. In the 2018–19 season, he guided Anadolu Efes to the EuroLeague Final Four, where they finished as runner-up.
His biggest achievements came in the 2020–21 and 2021–22 seasons. Ataman led Anadolu Efes to win the EuroLeague title two years in a row! He became the first Turkish coach to win the EuroLeague. During this time, they also won the Turkish Cup in 2022.
New Chapter with Panathinaikos
On April 21, 2023, Ataman signed a two-year contract with the Greek powerhouse team, Panathinaikos. This was a big new step in his career.
In his first season with Panathinaikos (2023–24), he quickly made an impact. He led the team to the EuroLeague Final Four for the first time in 12 years. Even more impressively, he guided Panathinaikos to win their seventh EuroLeague title, which was the first for the club since 2011! They beat Real Madrid in the final game.
In July 2024, Ataman extended his contract with Panathinaikos until 2027. Recently, a friendly match between Panathinaikos and Galatasaray led to a disagreement involving a gesture Ataman made. This caused a discussion with the Turkish national team.

Personal Life
Ergin Ataman went to the Italian High School in Istanbul. He later studied Business Administration at Istanbul University. He is married to Berna Ataman and they have a son named Sarp.
Ataman is a big fan and a member of the Galatasaray sports club. He is very popular among their supporters.
