Eric Michael-Jay Farris (born March 3, 1986) is a former American professional baseball player. He played as a second baseman and left fielder. Eric even played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Milwaukee Brewers. After his playing career, Eric became a baseball coach. He managed the Everett AquaSox in 2022. Currently, he is a coach for the Tacoma Rainiers. The Rainiers are a MiLB team for the Seattle Mariners.

Personal life

Eric Farris is an American of Black and Filipino heritage. His parents are Elizabeth and Darryl Farris. He has two sisters, Jeannette and Jessica. Eric is married to Kelley (Rose) Farris.

Amateur career

High school baseball

Eric Farris went to Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona. He was a fantastic player for the Huskies baseball team. He helped them win two state championships in a row! Eric hit very well, with a .469 batting average. He also had 41 runs batted in (RBI) and scored 50 runs. He stole 14 bases too.

Because of his great performance, he was named an All-American. He was also chosen as Arizona Player of the Year. The Atlanta Braves picked him in the 2004 MLB Draft. But Eric decided to play college baseball instead. He chose to play for the Loyola Marymount Lions.

College baseball

In 2005, Eric was supposed to be the starting shortstop for his college team. But he broke a bone in his hand before the season started. He missed six weeks of games. When he returned, he played second base. He was second on his team in batting average. This earned him a spot on the All-WCC team.

In 2006, Eric led his team in many important stats. He received an honorable mention for the All-WCC team. After the 2006 season, he played summer baseball. He played for the Cotuit Kettleers in the Cape Cod Baseball League. He was named a league all-star there.

His best year as a Lion was 2007. He led the team in batting average, stolen bases, runs, and hits. He was a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award. This award goes to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. Eric finished his college career with the fourth most stolen bases in his team's history. This was impressive, as he only played three seasons.

Professional career

Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers drafted Eric in the 4th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. He was the 131st player chosen overall. In 2007, he started his professional career. He played for the Rookie League Helena Brewers.

Eric played the 2008 season with the Class A West Virginia Power. In 2009, he played for the Class A-Advanced Brevard County Manatees. In 2010, he spent most of the season with the Triple-A Nashville Sounds. He hit .256 in 98 games for Nashville. After this, he was called up to the Major Leagues.

On July 28, 2011, Eric Farris joined the Milwaukee Brewers. He was called up because another player, Rickie Weeks, was injured. Eric made his MLB debut that same day. He entered the game as a pinch-hitter. He did not get a hit in his one at-bat. The next day, he was sent back to Nashville.

Other teams

The Seattle Mariners picked Eric in the 2012 Rule 5 draft. This draft allows teams to select players from other teams' minor league systems.

Eric signed a minor league deal with the Minnesota Twins on January 6, 2014. He became a free agent in November 2015.

On February 25, 2016, Eric signed with the Somerset Patriots. This team plays in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. This is an independent league, meaning it is not part of Major League Baseball. He became a free agent after the 2016 season. In 123 games, he hit .301. He also had 8 home runs, 66 RBIs, and 26 stolen bases.

Coaching career

Seattle Mariners

Eric Farris started his coaching career in 2018. He joined the minor league system of his former team, the Seattle Mariners. He had several different roles.

In 2018, he was the hitting coach for both the Everett AquaSox and the AZL Mariners. In 2019, he was the hitting coach for the West Virginia Power.

He was supposed to be the manager for the Power in 2020. However, all minor league baseball was canceled that season. This was due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Power team was later dissolved. Eric spent the 2021 season as the manager of the Low-A Modesto Nuts.

On February 2, 2022, it was announced that Eric would return to manage the Everett AquaSox. For the 2023 season, he was named the infield coach for the Tacoma Rainiers. The Rainiers are a Triple-A team for the Seattle Mariners. On January 24, 2024, Eric was announced as Tacoma's bench coach.
