Eric Tsang's Early Life
Eric Tsang is from the Hakka people, with family roots in Wuhua County. His father, Tsang Kai-wing, was a former football coach and player. He also worked for the Royal Hong Kong Police Force.
When Eric was young, he was a professional soccer player in Hong Kong. He is also a cousin of Frederick Ma, who used to be a government official.
Eric Tsang's Career in Entertainment
Eric Tsang started his career in show business as a stuntman. A stuntman is someone who performs dangerous actions in movies instead of the main actor.
Because he was so popular, Eric often became the master of ceremonies (MC) for events at TVB. He was the main host of the Super Trio series variety show. This led to him being nicknamed "Prize Master" (獎門人), which was his title on the show.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he made funny comedy cassette tapes with Andrew Lam Man Chung. Eric Tsang is also an occasional singer. He often sings parodies and theme songs for variety shows.
Acting and Awards
Eric Tsang has acted in many successful Hong Kong films. At first, he often played funny, clumsy sidekick characters. But his daughter, Bowie Tsang, encouraged him to try different roles. After that, he starred in a film with his friend Alan Tam and won a Hong Kong best actor award.
A film critic named Perry Lam said that Eric Tsang brings a very direct and honest style to his roles. He can sometimes act in a way that only the best actors can.
Leadership at TVB
In January 2021, Eric Tsang was given an important role at TVB. He became the deputy general manager for non-drama and music programs. He also became a special advisor. This means he helps decide what variety shows and entertainment programs TVB makes.
Later, in September 2021, TVB made him the new general manager of content operations. This means he is in charge of all the content that TVB creates.
Eric Tsang's Personal Life
Eric Tsang is a Buddhist. He often helps organize events to raise money for Buddhist temples and activities in Hong Kong.
His best friends are Natalis Chan and Alan Tam. They are also famous singers and actors from Hong Kong. Eric has been close with Alan Tam's family since they were kids. Their fathers worked together in the police force and played soccer.
Eric Tsang has been married two times. His first marriage was to actress Wang Mei Hua in 1972. They had two daughters, Bowie Tsang and Tsang Wing Yee. They later divorced in 1975.
His second marriage was to Rebecca Chu in 1989. They had two sons, Derek Tsang and Mark Tsang. Derek Tsang is now a director, known for the film Better Days. Rebecca Chu passed away in 2020.
