Erik Henrik Fredrik Bergman (born October 22, 1886 – died April 26, 1970) was a Swedish minister in the Lutheran Church. He was the father of three well-known children: Dag Bergman, who became a diplomat; Margareta Bergman, a novelist; and Ingmar Bergman, a famous film director.

Becoming a Priest

Erik Bergman was born in Mörbylånga, a place in Kalmar County, Sweden, in 1886. He became a priest for the Church of Sweden in Uppsala in 1912. The Church of Sweden is a national church that follows the Lutheran faith. In 1913, he began serving as a priest in a town called Valbo.

In 1918, Erik Bergman moved to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. There, he worked as a minister at Hedvig Eleonora Church. He later became the main priest, or "parish vicar," of the Hedvig Eleonora Parish in 1934. Because of his important role, he also served as a special chaplain for King Gustav V of Sweden. This meant he was a priest who advised and prayed with the king.

Family Life and Legacy

Erik Bergman was married to Karin Åkerblom, who was a nurse. She was also his second cousin. He wrote a book about his own life for his daughter Margareta in 1941.

His son, Ingmar Bergman, later used this book to help write a movie script. This script became the film The Best Intentions (1992). The movie tells the story of his parents' early life together. It shows how they met and the first years of their marriage.

Erik Bergman was known to be a strict father. His relationship with his son Ingmar was often difficult. This complex relationship was a theme in some of Ingmar Bergman's famous films. For example, it can be seen in the movie Fanny and Alexander. Erik Bergman was also shown in another film called Sunday's Children (1992). This movie was directed by Erik's grandson, Daniel Bergman. While Fanny and Alexander showed a harsh view of Erik, the later films The Best Intentions and Sunday's Children showed a more understanding picture of him.

Erik Bergman passed away in Stockholm in 1970.
