Hedvig Eleonora Church (Swedish: Hedvig Eleonora kyrka) is a beautiful and historic church in central Stockholm, Sweden. It is located in an area called Östermalm. This church belongs to the Church of Sweden and is the main parish church for the Hedvig Eleonora Parish.
The church was officially opened on August 21, 1737. It is named after the Swedish Queen Hedvig Eleonora (1636–1715). She was the wife of King Charles X of Sweden. Hedvig Eleonora Church has a unique octagonal, or eight-sided, shape.
A Popular Church in Stockholm
Hedvig Eleonora Church is one of the most popular churches in Stockholm. Many people choose it for special events like weddings and christenings. It is also a place for funerals. For example, the famous Swedish artist Lasse Berghagen was buried inside the church on November 20, 2023.
The church building also has a special musical instrument called a carillon. This carillon has 24 bells and was built in 1968 by the Bergholtz Bellfoundry.
