Erin Babcock (born June 6, 1981 – died April 25, 2020) was a Canadian nurse and politician. She was elected in the 2015 Alberta general election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. She represented the area called Stony Plain.

Early Life

Erin Babcock grew up in a family connected to the oil industry in Alberta. Her father worked as a pipeliner, which meant her family moved around a lot in Western Canada. She often spoke about how her family's work affected their lives and finances.

Her Career

Before becoming a politician in 2015, Erin Babcock worked as a licensed practical nurse starting in 2006. This means she was a healthcare professional who helped patients under the direction of doctors and registered nurses. She worked as a nurse in Kindersley, Saskatchewan, before moving to Edmonton.

Erin helped many different patients. She worked closely with older people and those who had strokes. She also cared for patients with serious mental and physical health challenges. While living in Kindersley, Erin was also involved with the Special Olympics. She was part of the group that helped guide the organization.

Time in the Alberta Government

In the 2015 Alberta election, Erin Babcock ran for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. This is like being a representative for a specific area, helping make laws for the province. She won against the person who was already in office, Ken Lemke, who was from the Progressive Conservative party. Erin became the representative for the Stony Plain area.

In the next election, the 2019 Alberta general election, the Stony Plain area was changed and became part of a new area called Spruce Grove-Stony Plain. Erin ran again, but she was defeated by Searle Turton, who was from the new United Conservative Party.

Her Illness and Passing

In May 2018, Erin Babcock was diagnosed with uterine cancer. Even though she was going through cancer treatment, she decided to keep working as the representative for Stony Plain. She said that her treatment would only take a few weeks and would not stop her from working on the issues she cared about.

One of the main promises Erin made when she first ran for office was to fight for fair access to healthcare for everyone in Alberta. This issue remained very important to her, even while she was getting her own treatment. Erin Babcock passed away from cancer in Edmonton on April 25, 2020. She was 38 years old.
