Erlend Haraldsson (born around 1124, died December 21, 1154) was an important leader in Orkney. He shared the title of Earl of Orkney from 1151 to 1154. Erlend was the son of Earl Harald Haakonsson. He ruled Orkney alongside Harald Maddadsson and Rögnvald Kali Kolsson.
A Tricky Time in Orkney
Erlend lived during a very busy and sometimes difficult time for Orkney. His father had been an earl before him. This meant Erlend had a strong claim to become an earl too. However, the leadership of the islands was often split between different people.
Erlend's father passed away unexpectedly around 1130 when Erlend was still a child. After his uncle, Paul Haakonsson, also died, the earldom was shared. It was split between Rögnvald and Harald "the Old" Maddadsson.
Erlend's Big Move
In 1151, Earl Rögnvald left Orkney. He went on a long journey to a holy place called the Holy Land. Erlend saw this as his chance to claim what he believed was his.
He quickly got half of his father's lands in Caithness from the king of Scotland. Then, he also claimed half of Orkney for himself. Earl Harald Maddadsson did not agree with this. So, Erlend sailed to Norway. He went to ask King Eystein Haraldsson for his share.
Fighting for Control
The King of Norway decided to give Erlend Harald Maddadsson's part of the Orkney earldom. This decision led to many small fights between Erlend and Harald.
Erlend had the support of Sweyn Asleifsson. Sweyn was a very strong Viking leader. This help allowed Erlend to defend himself for a while. He fought against the combined forces of Harald and Earl Rögnvald, who had returned.
The End of Erlend's Rule
Sadly, Erlend's enemies eventually caught up with him. Harald and Rögnvald's men attacked the island of Damsay. During this raid, on the night of December 21, 1154, Erlend was killed.
