Early Life and Studies
Ernest Corominas was born in the city of Barcelona, Spain, in 1913. He was a very bright student. He went to the University of Barcelona to study two different subjects. He studied both architecture and mathematics. Ernest finished his university studies in 1936.
A Time of Change and Travel
After his studies, Ernest Corominas served in the Spanish Civil War. He was an officer in the engineering part of the Spanish Republican Army. In 1939, when the war ended, he moved to France for safety.
A year later, in 1940, he traveled even further. He moved all the way to South America. First, he worked as an architect in Chile for six months. Then, he moved to Argentina. In Argentina, a famous mathematician named Julio Rey Pastor offered him a job. Ernest became a lecturer at the University of Buenos Aires.
Becoming a Doctor of Math
After his time in South America, Ernest Corominas returned to Europe. He wanted to continue his advanced studies. In 1952, he earned his doctorate degree from the University of Paris. A doctorate is a very high university degree. His main teacher for this degree was Arnaud Denjoy.
After getting his doctorate, Ernest taught at several famous universities. He lectured in Barcelona, at Princeton University in the United States, and at the University City of Caracas in Venezuela. Finally, he settled in France. He began teaching at the University of Lyon. In 1966, Ernest Corominas officially became a French citizen.
Later Life and Recognition
Ernest Corominas was recognized for his important work in mathematics. In 1953, he received a special award called a Guggenheim Fellowship. This award helps smart people do more research and study. Ernest Corominas passed away on January 24, 1992.
