Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ernestine Tahedl (born in 1940) is a talented Canadian painter. She is known for her unique art, especially her abstract landscapes.

Early Life and Art Training

Ernestine Tahedl was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1940. When she was younger, she went to the Academy of Applied Arts Vienna. This is a special art school in Vienna. In 1961, she earned a master's degree in graphic arts. This means she became an expert in creating art using different printing methods.

After art school, Ernestine worked with her father, Heinrich Tahedl, for two years. They worked together to design and create beautiful stained glass pieces. Stained glass is art made from colorful pieces of glass joined together, often seen in churches. After this, Ernestine moved to Canada.

Her Art and Style

Ernestine Tahedl is most famous for her abstract landscapes. These are paintings that show nature, like mountains or fields, but in a unique and non-realistic way. Instead of painting exactly what she sees, she uses shapes, colors, and textures to express feelings or ideas about the landscape.

In 1981, she created a collection of etchings called Circle of Energy. Etchings are a type of printmaking where an artist carves a design into a metal plate, then uses ink to transfer the design onto paper. Later, in 1989, she also helped restore a church in Klagenfurt, which means she helped fix and bring back its original beauty.

Exhibitions and Awards

Ernestine Tahedl's art has been shown in many places around the world. She has had her own art shows (called solo shows) and been part of group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, and Europe. Her paintings are now part of many important art collections. These include public collections (like museums), private collections, and even collections owned by companies.

Throughout her career, Ernestine Tahedl has won several awards for her artistic talent:

  • In 1963, she won a bronze medal at an international art exhibition in Vienna.
  • In 1966, she received the allied arts medal from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
  • In 1967, she was given an arts award from the Canada Council, which supports artists in Canada.
  • Also in 1967, she won a purchase award at the Concours Artistiques du Québec. This means her art was bought for a collection after being recognized in a competition.
