Ernest Wesley Young (born July 8, 1969) is an American former professional baseball player. He played as an outfielder and is now a coach for the United States national baseball team. Ernie played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for eight seasons. He was mostly with the Oakland Athletics. He also played one season in Japan.
Ernie Young won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He later won a silver medal as a coach at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In 2013, he was honored in the Buffalo Baseball Hall of Fame. This was for his great contributions while playing for the Buffalo Bisons.
Ernie Young's Baseball Playing Career
Ernie Young played in 288 major league games. He had 179 hits and hit 27 home runs. He also had 90 RBI, which means he helped 90 teammates score runs. He stole 10 bases during his career. His batting average was .225.
In 2000, Ernie played for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds. He led his team with 35 home runs that year. He also had 98 RBIs, showing he was a strong hitter. On June 12, 2006, he hit his 300th home run in the minor leagues.
While playing for the Oakland Athletics, Ernie made an amazing play. In a game against the Detroit Tigers, he started a triple play. He made a leaping catch in center field, which helped his team get three outs in one play.
Coaching and Managing in Minor Leagues
After he stopped playing baseball in 2007, Ernie Young became a coach. He started as a hitting coach for the Chicago White Sox' rookie team. This team was called the Great Falls Voyagers.
In 2008, he became the manager for the Kannapolis Intimidators. A manager is like the head coach of a team. Later, in 2011, Ernie managed the West Michigan Whitecaps. This team was connected to the Detroit Tigers. He managed them for two seasons.
Olympic Success with Team USA
Ernie Young has had a very successful international career with Team USA. As a player, he won a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. This exciting event took place in Sydney, Australia.
After his playing days, Ernie continued to work with the national team. He managed the team for the 2011 Baseball World Cup. The team finished in fourth place. He also managed them for the Baseball at the 2011 Pan American Games, where they won a silver medal.
In 2019, Ernie became a coach for the national team again. They played in the 2019 WBSC Premier12 tournament. The team finished fourth, but they did not qualify for the 2020 Olympics that year.
However, in April 2021, Ernie was named a coach for the national team once more. This time, they were trying to qualify for the baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The team successfully qualified! Ernie served as the hitting coach and first base coach for the Olympics. The team played very well and won a silver medal. They lost to Japan in the gold-medal game.
