Eroski is a large supermarket chain from the Basque Country in Spain. It has almost 1,000 stores across Spain.
Eroski is special because it's a co-operative. This means it's partly owned by its workers and partly by its customers. It's part of a bigger group called the Mondragón Corporation.
Eroski stores come in different sizes. The biggest ones are called 'Eroski' hypermarkets. There are 75 of these, and 40 of them even have petrol stations. Smaller stores are called 'Eroski Center' (473 stores) and 'Eroski City' (219 stores). Eroski also has 234 'Eroski Viajes' travel agencies.
The name Eroski comes from two Basque words: "erosi" which means "to buy", and "toki" which means "place". So, it means "buying place"!

Eroski's Story
Eroski started in 1969 in the regions of Biscay and Gipuzkoa in Spain. It began as a co-operative when ten local supermarkets joined together. Its main office is in Elorrio, Biscay.
Franchise Stores

You might see supermarkets called Aliprox. These stores are not directly owned by Eroski, even though their logo looks similar. Aliprox stores are actually franchises. This means they are owned by independent people or companies. However, they still sell the same products and follow the same rules as Eroski stores. There are currently 553 franchised Aliprox stores.
Eroski's Finances
Eroski has been doing well financially. In the first half of 2016, its income was much higher than the year before. It continued to improve, making 54 million Euros.
- Eroski has opened 442 new generation shops. These include 23 hypermarkets and 419 supermarkets. Their sales have grown by 7% on average.
- The company's total sales stayed steady at 2,965 million Euros.
- Eroski invested 45 million Euros, mostly to update its shops and computer systems.
- It also paid off a lot of its debt, reducing it by 169 million Euros in six months.
- Between February and July of that year, Eroski created 625 new jobs in its own and franchised shops.
- The main Eroski co-operative made a profit of 8.8 million Euros.
Eroski Staff

How Eroski Grew

Changing Store Names
Eroski used to have different names for its stores, like 'Maxi', 'Consum', and 'Charter'. 'Charter' was used for smaller franchise stores. Between 2003 and 2004, Eroski changed all these names to make things clearer. The company realized that customers usually called all their stores 'Eroski' anyway, no matter what the sign said. This change helped customers know exactly which company they were shopping with.
Eroski Around the World
Spain
In 2007, Eroski bought another supermarket chain called Caprabo. This added about 500 more supermarkets to Eroski's network in Spain.
France
Eroski has a strong presence in Spain, especially in the Basque Country where it started. Now, it is also growing in France. In France, Eroski has three hypermarkets, eighteen supermarkets, and seven petrol stations.
Besides supermarkets, Eroski also owns the Forum Sport store chain, which sells sports equipment. They also own 172 perfume shops and six cash and carry stores, which sell goods in bulk.
Eroski once merged with a co-operative from Valencia called Consum. But this partnership only lasted a few years, and they separated in 2005.
United Kingdom
As of 2022, Eroski has four stores in Gibraltar, which is a British territory located at the southern tip of Spain.
