This special plant only grows in Tulare County, California. It is found in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is quite rare, growing in only about ten known spots in that area. When a plant or animal only lives in one specific place, it is called endemic.

The scientific name pusaterii was chosen to honor Samuel J. Pusateri. He was a person from the College of the Sequoias who first collected samples of this plant for study.

About the Kaweah Lakes Fawn Lily

This beautiful wildflower lives for many years. Plants that live for more than two years are called perennials. It grows from a round bulb (like an onion) that is about 4 to 6 centimeters wide. The plant usually has two long, wavy leaves, each up to 35 centimeters long.

Its flowers grow on a tall stem, which can reach up to 40 centimeters high. Each stem can have one to eight flowers. Each flower has six petal-like parts called tepals. These tepals are about 4.5 centimeters long. They are white at their tips and yellow near the bottom. As they get older, the yellow parts can turn pink.
