Esbensen Bay is a small bay located near the bottom of South America, on an island called South Georgia. It's about 1.85 kilometers (or 1 nautical mile) southwest of a place called Nattriss Head.
Discovering Esbensen Bay
This bay was first mapped out by a group of explorers during the Second German Antarctic Expedition, which happened between 1911 and 1912. This expedition was led by a person named Filchner.
Why is it Called Esbensen Bay?
The bay was named after Captain Viktor Esbensen. He was in charge of a whaling station called Compañía Argentina de Pesca in Grytviken. This station was the very first place on land in Antarctica where whales were processed.
What is Shannon Point?
The southwest side of the entrance to Esbensen Bay has a special marker called Shannon Point (54°52′S 35°58′W / 54.867°S 35.967°W). This point was mapped in 1930 by people from the Discovery Investigations. They were on a ship called the RRS William Scoresby. Shannon Point was named after Lieutenant Commander R.L.V. Shannon of the Royal Navy, who was the captain of the William Scoresby when they surveyed the area.
