Escamilla is a small town, also called a municipality. It is found in the province of Guadalajara, in the region of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. In 2004, about 108 people lived there. By 2018, the population was around 60 people.

Escamilla's Location and Landscape

Escamilla is located high up, at 1,023 meters (about 3,356 feet) above sea level. The municipality covers an area of 39.21 square kilometers. It shares borders with several other towns and a province.

To the north, it borders Peralveche. To the east, you'll find Salmerón and the Province of Cuenca. Pareja is to the west, and Millana is to the south.

A small stream flows through Escamilla. This stream drains into the Guadiela River Basin to the south. The highest point in the area is called Villar, standing at 1,102 meters. It's just over 2 miles north of the town. The lowest point is about 800 meters to the south.

Escamilla's Changing Population

Escamilla was once a more important town, especially in the mid-1900s. Growing lavender brought some money to the area. However, people stopped growing lavender for different reasons. This led to a period where the town became less active.

You can still see signs of this decline today. There are ruins of a lavender distillery about 100 meters south of the village. This change caused many people to move away. The town's population started to shrink.

In 1960, Escamilla had 591 residents. By 1970, this number dropped to 353. By 2000, fewer than 100 people lived there. In 2005, only about 40 people lived in Escamilla permanently.
