The Escoma Municipality is a special area in Bolivia. It's like a local government district. It's the fifth such district in the Eliodoro Camacho Province, which is part of the La Paz Department. Escoma Municipality was officially created on February 6, 2009. Before that, it was part of the Viacha Municipality. The main town, or 'seat,' of Escoma Municipality is a place also called Escoma. In 2001, about 576 people lived there.
Escoma Municipality is located in a high-altitude area called the Altiplano. It sits on the western edge of the Cordillera Real, which is a mountain range. It shares its borders with different places:
- To the north-east, north, and west, it borders the Puerto Acosta Municipality.
- To the south, it touches Lake Titicaca, a very large lake.
- To the south-east, it borders the Puerto Carabuco Municipality.
- To the east, it borders the Mocomoco Municipality.
How Escoma Municipality is Divided
The Escoma Municipality is split into four smaller areas called cantons. Think of them like smaller districts within the municipality.
Canton | Number of People (2001) | Main Town |
---|---|---|
Escoma Canton | 5,097 | Escoma |
Challapata Peninsula Canton | 905 | Challapata |
Collasuyo Canton | 561 | Collasuyo |
Villa Puni Canton | 514 | Villa Puni |
Before Escoma Municipality was created, all these cantons were part of the Viacha Municipality.
