Esker is a small, unincorporated community located in Portage County, Wisconsin, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's usually part of a larger county or township.
Where is Esker Located?
Esker, pronounced like "EEE-skir," is found in the middle of Wisconsin. It's about four miles east of a bigger city called Stevens Point. You can find Esker near U.S. Highway 10 and Portage County Road K. It's also very close to another community named Custer, being less than a mile northeast of it. Esker is part of the larger area known as the town of Stockton.
A Brief Look at Esker's Past
Esker used to be a growing place located north of Custer. It was home to St. Mary's Parish, which is a church, and had many homes built on the hill around it.
Over time, things changed for Esker. U.S. Highway 10 was rebuilt into a bigger, four-lane freeway with new exits. This change split Esker into two parts. Now, some areas, like "Custer Square," can only be reached from County Road J on the west side. Other parts, including Esker Road, Summit Lane, and Lloyd Court, can only be accessed from County Road K on the east. Because of these changes, many people now think of Esker as part of the nearby community of Custer, which is closer to the railroad tracks and located downhill.
