Espinar is a small community, or barrio, located in the town of Aguada, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,281 people lived there. It's a part of the beautiful island of Puerto Rico.
History of Espinar
Espinar has a long and interesting history. It is found close to the Culebrinas River. The area is named after a Franciscan priest who started a religious community there.
Sadly, in 1529, this priest and others were killed by the native Island Caribs. To honor them, a special place of worship called a hermitage was built. Later, Franciscan priests built a new church on the same spot. Religious services are still held there today.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened under the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the U.S. In 1899, the U.S. government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that Espinar and a nearby area called Carrizal had a total population of 1,010 people.
