Esteban Daza facts for kids
Esteban Daza (also known as Estevan Daça) was a Spanish composer and a musician who played the vihuela. He was born around 1537 in Valladolid, Spain, and passed away there sometime between 1591 and 1596. Daza lived during the Renaissance period. He was one of the last important vihuelists of his time. This was because the guitar started to become much more popular than the vihuela.
Daza came from a middle class family. He was the oldest of fourteen children! He went to the University of Valladolid and likely finished his studies in the early 1560s. Esteban Daza was lucky because he did not need to work. He lived off money from his family's investments. He lived with his parents until at least 1569, when his father passed away. Later, in the early 1590s, records show he lived outside Valladolid in a house owned by his brother.
His Famous Music Book
Esteban Daza is known for only one music book called El Parnaso. This means "The Parnassus" in English. It was printed in 1576 in Valladolid. The book has music for the vihuela by itself. It also has songs for the vihuela and a singer.
The full name of the book is Libro de música de cifras para vihuela, intitulado El Parnaso. This long title means "Book of music in tablature for vihuela, titled The Parnassus." The book is split into three parts. It includes Daza's own original pieces, called fantasias. It also has his special versions of songs by other composers. These include different types of songs like motets, villancicos, and sonnets. Some of the composers he included were Pedro Guerrero and Francisco Guerrero.
