Estelle Reiner (born Lebost) was an American actress and singer. She was born on June 5, 1914, and passed away on October 25, 2008. She was married to the famous comedian Carl Reiner and was the mother of actor and director Rob Reiner. The New York Times called her an important person in American comedy.

Estelle Reiner's Life and Work

Estelle Reiner grew up in the Bronx, New York. She graduated from James Monroe High School. Before becoming an actress, she was a visual artist. She met her future husband, Carl Reiner, while working in the Catskills. She designed stage sets for hotel shows there.

Estelle and Carl Reiner got married in 1943. They had three children: Rob, Lucas, and Annie.

Early Career and Family Life

Carl Reiner created a TV comedy show in the 1960s called The Dick Van Dyke Show. This show was based on his own life working as a writer for Sid Caesar. In the show, Carl Reiner played the character based on Sid Caesar. Dick Van Dyke played a character named Rob Petrie, who was based on Carl Reiner's real-life job as a writer.

The show was very similar to their real lives. The Petrie family in the show lived on Bonnie Meadow Road in New Rochelle, New York. This was the same street where the real-life Reiner family lived. Rob Reiner, their son, said that his father "basically wrote his own life" in the show. He also said that his mother, Estelle, was like the character Mary Tyler Moore played.

Becoming a Performer

When Estelle Reiner was in her 60s, she started a new career as a cabaret singer. She performed for many years, almost until her death. She also studied acting with famous teachers. One of them was Lee Strasberg, who helped create "method acting." She also learned from Viola Spolin, who is known as the "American Grandmother of Improvisation."

Estelle Reiner appeared in several comedy films. She was in the 1980 movie Fatso with Dom DeLuise, playing Mrs. Goodman. In 1983, she appeared in The Man With Two Brains with Steve Martin. She played a "Tourist in Elevator" in that film. She was also in Mel Brooks' movie To Be or Not to Be, where she played a character named Gruba.

Famous Movie Line

Estelle Reiner is most famous for a line she said in the 1989 movie When Harry Met Sally.... She played an older woman customer in a restaurant scene. The main character, Sally, pretends to have a very loud and fake moment. After Sally finishes, Estelle Reiner's character calmly tells the waitress, "I'll have what she's having."

This line became very popular. The American Film Institute ranked it 33rd on their list of the Top 100 movie quotations. It is one of the most memorable lines in movie history.
