History of the Major Junior Team (1957–1971)
In 1956, a man named Scotty Munro had a great idea for Estevan. He wanted to move his hockey team, the Humboldt/Melfort Indians, to the town. This team was part of the original Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (1948–1966). At that time, this league was the top junior hockey league in Saskatchewan.
Munro promised that if Estevan built a new arena, he would bring exciting hockey. He also said he would help local youth hockey programs. The people of Estevan liked his plan.
A year later, in 1957, the team moved to Estevan. They were renamed the "Bruins" and started playing in the new Agricultural Auditorium. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League had six teams back then. The Estevan Bruins were the team furthest south. They were about 800 kilometers from the Flin Flon Bombers, the team furthest north.
By 1966, the league had grown to eight teams. Then, it changed. Five of its teams, including the Estevan Bruins, joined a new league. This new league was called the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League.
The CMJHL changed its name to the Western Canada Junior Hockey League in 1967. The Bruins had their best season in 1967–68. They finished second in the regular season. Then, they won the President's Cup as the WCHL playoff champions.
After that, they won the Abbott Cup. This made them the champions of Western Canada. The Bruins then played for the 1968 Memorial Cup, which is the national championship. They played against the Niagara Falls Flyers from Ontario. The Bruins lost the series in five games.
The Bruins played in Estevan until the 1970–71 season. After that, they moved to New Westminster, British Columbia. There, they became the New Westminster Bruins.
